Neck/Shoulder Pain Q & A

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain can be caused by numerous different factors. Usually overuse, repetitive motions, and sudden twisting play some sort of role. Even things as simple as using a computer and staring at the monitor repeatedly throughout each day can cause neck pain. The most common causes include:

  • Trauma
  • Muscle strain
  • Sprains
  • Degenerative diseases
  • Abnormalities in the joints or bones
  • Poor posture
  • Tumors

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint and the range of movement is quite large. Joints that are used frequently and for a wide range of motions are more susceptible to injury. Shoulder pain can be caused by one or more of the following items:

  • Unstable shoulder joint
  • Dislocation
  • Tendonitis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Strains from overexertion
  • Fractures to the collar or upper arm bones
  • Pinched nerves, also called radiculopathy

What Treatments Are Used?

After an assessment from Dr. Chad has been conducted and it is determined that a fracture is not the cause of the pain, he can begin treatment. The most common method used to treat neck pain is called an adjustment, or cervical manipulation. This procedure uses precise motions and pressure on the joints of the neck. This can increase the movement of the adjoining muscles and most patients report improve mobility in the neck, reduction of soreness and pain, and stiffness. Dr. Chad will create a treatment program which may also combine more than one type of care, depending on your needs. In addition to manipulation, the treatment can also include massage, mobilization, rehabilitative exercises, or another type of maneuver.
